STORY
This was unexpectedly an amazing film. I said that because I wasn't really a fan of the series. When the TV adaptation came out, it was overshadowed by Given, which was released about a year later.
So, when I saw the title, I actually thought I didn't know anything about this movie. It was only after doing some research I realized I'd already seen the TV anime.
The problem I had with the series was that it had too many steamy scenes, which just made it forgettable. But, thankfully, the movie didn't follow that path. It focused more on what was important which was the plot. (Although, of course, there were still some of those scenes, even hotter this time in my opinion. But, it had just enough screen time. So, everything's balanced.)
This film delivered more in-depth storytelling that covered the past (mostly about Junta) and the innermost thoughts and feelings of our main characters. Which for me, this time, made them relatable and memorable.
There were also old and new characters, the one who the fans may be excited to see was Arisu Kiyotaka. We finally get to see him with Usaka Kazuomi and know more a bit about their relationship.
CAST
Takato Saijou
If there was an award show exclusive to the Boys' Love theme, Takato's character would have won for his role. From being a motivated actor to becoming a better lover of Junta, his character development skyrocketed in this film. His dance scene at the end was very climactic.
Junta Azumaya
Since the movie's setting was where he spent his childhood, we got to see more of his past. And I think that was very important, as we were able to understand more how Takato changed him for the better.
Antonio
A new supporting character who's madly in love with Junta. So, obviously, he dislikes Takato, but he doesn't hate him. In fact, at some point, he'll be a mentor to his rival.
Ceres
The sexy and young-looking granddad of Junta. He defines the saying 'Age is just a number.' At first, it was a bit cringy for me when it seemed like he was flirting with Takato. But, in the middle of the story, he became more like a guiding light.
WRITING
Definitely a vast improvement compared to the TV series. There was enough blend of comedy, romance, and lust. Speaking of lust, there's a public *thing* scene, and it was quite surprising (might be shocking to some), but for me, it was dramatically beautiful. So, no complaint there.
The best-written background story for me was Ceres', from his relationship with the young Junta and Antonio, and his wife. You will just clearly see how he has grown into someone with a high amount of wisdom.
TECHNICALITIES
The background art was awesome, it was very detailed and it really captured how Spain will look in anime.
The best compliment I can give is the flamenco dance and music. I was really drawn, even though I don't have enough interest in it. So, this film sold it to me.
The animation for the dance sequences was also amazing. They were in sync with the music, and the dance itself was well-choreographed.
WATCH OR SKIP?
I highly recommend this film, even if you're not a fan of the series, or you're simply new to this BL anime.
Notable Quotes
Takato: If this keeps up... Rather than living together... It's more like I'm going to be left behind because of his talents.
Takato: I will do what I have to do. You do what you have to do. That's what I told you, right?
Junta: Yeah. No, but I thought I could help Takato somehow...
Takato: Don't underestimate me. I have to do something by myself!
Junta: It's that again, huh. You want to do everything by yourself.
Takato: Of course. It's me after all.
Antonio: Do you think yesterday's enemy is today's friend? Go away!
Takato: I won't!
Antonio's mom: Stop making a scene in the shop! Your face is already noisy enough!
Antonio: Did Nina say to Junta that you're going to go for his sake?
Takato: There's no need to say such a thing, right? It's something that I need, so I did it.
Antonio: Here it goes! You're telling me he should know without you telling him? This is why Japanese guys are so... Is it the atmosphere? Are you telling him to read the atmosphere? That's just being lazy in communicating! Atmosphere is something you fill your lungs with!
Ceres: I think I understand why Junta is charmed by you. Rather than having big bodies like us, the capacity of your heart is big.
